Congo Law to Protect Indigenous Children

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) hailed a new law on December 31st granting children in the Republic of Congo of indigenous origin a legal basis to access health, education and protection. This new law is a major step forward for the Congolese people’s future. According to UNICEF, the Congo is one of the poorest countries in the world and its indigenous populations are on the “bottom rung of the society, the poorest of the poor.” Fifty percent of indigenous children have no birth certificate in the Congo, and 1 out of 5 children dies before reaching the age of five.
