Improving Sanitation in Haitian Schools

Due to the 2010 earthquake, over a million people lack access to clean water and sanitation. Over 5,000 schools were destroyed in the earth quake. Following the earthquake, there was an enormous cholera outbreak. Since October 2010, more than 7,000 have died because of cholera. This outbreak has made clean sanitation a clear necessity, especially among schools.

UNICEF is working towards improving water and sanitation in Haiti's schools. Between 2010 and 2011, UNICEF has provided new latrines and hand washing stands to 198 schools. Emphasis, however, is put on training schools on how to manage the WASH facilities. To ensure improved sanitation and clean water it is critical that the schools take primary responsibility over their WASH facilities.

Working with the Haitian government, UNICEF will continue to work towards establishing good sanitation and clean water in schools.
